Grace and courtesy should be encouraged from the very beginning and consistently reintroduced to the children. These are lessons given on how to interrupt, how to speak during work time, how to roll up a mat, how to handle conflict between themselves, how to greet a visitor, how to sit at circle time, how to say hello and good-bye, etc so that there exists less need for intervention by the Guide (teacher).
Grace and courtesy is essential to the smooth flow of the work cycle (i.e. a child would have a difficult time building their concentration if they are constantly being interrupted by another child walking on their mat.) Grace and courtesy are essential to the framework of a working Montessori class and must be given the same value by the Montessori guide as reading or writing. These are skills a child will use their whole life, in many different capacities; and the practice of grace and courtesy makes it possible for 24 children to move about, all doing separate work and having the freedom to answer each of their own inner "calls to work".
